SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers' Association) sets the recognised UK standards for the design, installation and inspection of pallet racking systems. Compliance protects your staff, your stock and your insurance position.
The three key documents
- **SEMA Code of Practice** — design and installation guidance.
- **HSG76** — HSE guidance for warehousing safety.
- **EN 15635** — European standard for use and maintenance of storage equipment.
Annual expert inspections
Under EN 15635, an "expert" inspection should be carried out at least once every 12 months. Damage is graded:
- **Green** — monitor only
- **Amber** — repair required within 4 weeks, load reduced
- **Red** — unload and isolate immediately
Weekly visual checks
A nominated PRRS (Person Responsible for Racking Safety) should perform documented weekly visual checks between expert inspections.
